Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir out-kicked world record holder Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia down the final straight to in the women’s marathin world championhip on Sunday in Tokyo.
Jepchirchir finished in 2:24:43 to add a Tokyo world title to the Olympic gold she won in Japan in 2021.
Japan has been good for the 31-year-old Jepchirchir, who won the Saitama Marathon in 2019.
« I was not expecting to win, » she said, « I’m so happy. »
